Haute Route Verbier-Zermatt with Via Ferrata and Breithorn
This adventurous glacier tour with Via Ferrata and the ascent of the 4164m high Breithorn is a physically challenging but very varied. During the entire program you'll stay at altitude; the daily stages run between 5 and 8 hours, mostly in snow and ice, but also over moraines and rocky mountain paths. In terms of overnight stays, we pay a lot of attention to comfort; we sleep twice in a hut and the other nights in mountain hotels or lodges, partly with wellness facilities.

Day 1. Meeting point is our own comfortable Bekker Mountain Chalet in Finhaut, on the edge of the Mont Blanc massif on the Swiss-French border in between Verbier and Chamonix. We recommend you to travel to the mountains earlier in order to acclimatize and hike. You can also book extra nights in our chalet; you are here in a hiking paradise, far away from the crowds! Meeting point is at the end of the afternoon for a welcome drink and snack, followed by the briefing and dinner. Night at the chalet.
Day 2 After preparing the backpacks and checking the equipment, we are taken to the Val de Bagnes (near Verbier), to Mauvoisin. We leave our backpacks with crampons etc at the hotel and hike in 10 minutes to the start of the via ferrata of the Val de Bagnes. After instruction in the use of the via ferrata set we go through this fun via ferrata which consists of 2 parts and traverses through the Gorges of Mauvoisins above the lake in a beautiful and wild environment. Overnight in the nice little hotel with half board (dinner and breakfast) at 1850m. You will sleep in a double or triple room (single room, if available, at an extra charge).
Day 3. An early taxi will take us via the Mauvoisin dam on an exciting tunnel road to the end of the reservoir at point 2337m (the Cabane de Chanrion is closed this summer due to lack of water, has happened before). From here we reach the tongue of the long Otemma glacier at 2500m. The first part is empty, ie without snow, later we walk in the snow and also on the rope. We go via the col du petit Mont Collon (3284m) to the Col de l’Evèque (3379m). Now the descent to the Col de Collon (3068m) begins and we descend to the Rifugio Nacamulli in Italy (2830m). Long day, but very nice hut, good food and ditto wines, always a party in Italy.
Day 4. Early in the morning we leave again up to the Col de Collon and then descend over the glacier to the upper Glacier d'Arolla which we enter at about 2850m. Here we climb up again to the Col du Mont Brulé (3214m) the last stretch on the rope with ice axe and crampons. Beautiful view! We descend over the Haut Glacier de Tsa de Tsan and to the Col de la Division (3314m). We descend further to the high and rugged Rifugio Aosta (2781m), again in Italy, where we will spend the night.
Day 5. Up to the Col de Valpelline and possibly climb the Tete de Valpelline (3798m). Now we have an amazing view of the Dent d'Hérens (4174m) and the Cervin (4478m). In other words, Matterhorn. We descend on the rope over the split Stockjigletscher, Tiefmattengletscher and Zmuttgletscher; we are now directly under the imposing Matterhorn north face. A long tiring walk over large moraine stones and later roads leads us to Furi (1832m) above Zermatt. Here we spend the night in a well-deserved fine hotel with wellness!
Day 6. We get in the lift in Furi to the Klein Matterhorn (3882m), an experience in itself. From here we have a beautiful view of the Mont Blanc, Grand Combin and Monte Viso in the Alpes Maritimes, just above Nice. Meanwhile, the Breithorn (4164m) is no longer difficult for us. We climb it and the view is overwhelming. We descend again, take the lift down to Zermatt and after a well-deserved pizza on the terrace at the railwaystation we take the train back to Finhaut via Visp. Once back in Finhaut we enjoy the traditional cheese fondue on the terrace, followed by an overnight stay in the chalet.
Day 7. End of the program after breakfast.
